چکیده

Polarization measurements in the X-ray and gamma-ray energy range can provide crucial information on massive compact objects such as black holes and neutron stars. The Polarized Gamma-ray Observer (PoGO) is a new balloon-borne instrument designed to measure polarization from astrophysical objects in the 30-100 keV range, under development by an international collaboration with members from United States, Japan, Sweden and France. To examine PoGO’s capability, a beam test of a simplified prototype detector array was conducted at the Argonne National Laboratory Advanced Photon Source. The detector array consisted of seven plastic scintillators, and was irradiated by polarized photon beams at 60, 73, and 83 keV. The data showed a clear polarization signal, with a measured modulation factor of 0.42± 0.01. This was successfully reproduced at the 10% level by the computer simulation package Geant4 after modifications to its implementation of polarized Compton/Rayleigh scattering. Details of the beam test and the validation of the Geant4 simulations are presented.

Beam test of a prototype phoswich detector assembly for the PoGOLite astronomical soft gamma-ray polarimeter

We report about the beam test on a prototype of the balloon-based astronomical soft gamma-ray polarimeter, PoGOLite (Polarized Gamma-ray Observer Light Version) conducted at KEK Photon Factory, a synchrotron radiation facility in Japan. The synchrotron beam was set at 30, 50, and 70 keV and its polarization was monitored by a calibrated polarimeter. The goal of the experiment was to validate th...

GRAPE - A Balloon-Borne Gamma-Ray Polarimeter Experiment

This paper reviews the development status of GRAPE (the GammaRay Polarimeter Experiment), a hard X-ray Compton Polarimeter. The purpose of GRAPE is to measure the polarization of hard X-rays in the 50-300 keV energy range. We are particularly interested in X-rays that are emitted from solar flares and gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), although GRAPE could also be employed in the study of other astrophys...

Caliste-MM: a spectro-polarimeter based on the micromegas concept for soft X-ray astrophysics

Performing X-ray polarimetry of astrophysical sources is a topic of growing interest, with only a few flying experiments dedicated to it so far. For soft X-rays sources detection from 1 keV to a few tens of keV, the best technique certainly consists in using the photoelectric effect, which is the dominant phenomenon at those energies in gaseous detectors. One of the main issues is the gaseous d...

The Cadmium Zinc Telluride (CZT) Detector Array Innovation Pathway

This pathway describes the development of soft gamma-ray/hard x-ray detector arrays at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC, or Goddard), through a collaboration between the gamma-ray spectroscopy group and the detector branch. The Cadmium Zinc Telluride (CdZnTe, or CZT) detectors which resulted from this decade-long development were first flown on the wildly successful SWIFT mission in 200...

Assessment of X-Ray Crosstalk in a Computed Tomography Scanner with Small Detector Elements Using Monte Carlo Method

Introduction: Crosstalk is a leakage of X-ray or light produced in a matrix of X-ray detectors or array of photodiodes in one element to other elements affecting on image contrast and spatial resolution. In this study, we assessed X-ray crosstalk in a computed tomography (CT) scanner with small detector elements to estimate the effect of various parameters such as X-ray tube voltage, detector e...
